I’m always on the lookout for new ways to make living more simply, simpler. Occasionally I find a great product that proves to be a game-changer, both for my pocket and for the planet. So here’s the second ‘best buy’ I’d like to let you in on.
This is one for those coffee and tea lovers out there, which is most people (except my husband!).
I had a bit of a wake-up call in March thanks to celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall’s campaign “Wake Up and Smell the Waste”.
For as long as I can remember I had been diligently rinsing out my single use coffee cups and popping them in the recycling. The campaign highlighted the fact that they are not widely recyclable as they have a special plastic lining inside to stop them going soggy. In the UK alone it is estimated that we throw away 2.5 billion a year- that’s 7 million a day! That also represents 350,000 trees each year that are used to make the cups, nearly all of which can’t be recycled.
So I set about researching the options for a re-usable coffee cup. They are typically made of plastic or there are thermos varieties. However, one caught my attention immediately- the KeepCup.
The KeepCup Original is made of BPA and BPS free plastic. They come in a whole range of gorgeous colours, or you can customise your own. They are Barista Standard and come in a range of 4oz – 16 oz. sizes. Take a tea or coffee from home in the morning and refill during the day. Many outlets like Starbucks are offering a discount if you bring your own cup.
My favourite is the KeepCup ‘Purist’ as it is made of glass, and as a tea drinker I can taste the difference. The 12oz size is the equivalent of a large mug. It is difficult to break as it is tempered to withstand shock and the lid is splash proof. For fun I designed one in Planet & Soul colours. It has sparked interest in every café where it’s made an appearance. I tested it out recently at Starbucks and received a 50p discount on my cup of tea. If you buy one hot drink a day you will have paid for it in less than a month. And it tastes much better!
KeepCup also became certified as a ‘B Corporation’ in September 2014. ‘B Corp’ is a movement of companies worldwide who are redefining what success in business looks like. Their aim isn’t simply to make a profit but they are also committed to making a positive social and environmental impact. Click here to find out more and to check out other brands that are certified.
